National Costume Festival
National Costume Festival
Date: July 10.
Location: Main square of Ulaanbaatar
Every year National Costume Day takes place on 9 July, a day before Naadam Festival on main square of Ulaanbaatar. The aim of festival is to encourage the younger generation to wear traditional clothing and to promote Mongolian culture and tradition to tourists.
Our traditional costume consists of a deel, hat, belt, boots and accessories. The deel is the main part and has been worn for centuries.
The costumes of various ethnic groups in the country vary, but all the deels have the same shape, featuring long sleeves, a wide flap that gets folded at the chest, buttons on the right shoulder, a high collar, and a fabric or decorated with silver- pattern leader belt around the waist. There are basically two forms: one for winter, which is lined with wool, and a lighter one for summer. Both are covered in silk mostly on special occasions and in daily life in cotton. A fashion show of designer’s collections is presented and colorful parade of best dressed up families in traditional clothes walk the square and awards are given to best dressed couples, families and even to best dressed foreigner in Mongolian costume.
